Your First Cycling Class: What to Expect and Helpful Tips
Thinking about taking your first cycling class? Whether you’re curious about what to expect or looking for tips for first-time riders, we’ve got you covered. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know so you can show up feeling confident, excited, and ready to ride in your first indoor spin or cycle class.
1. Book Your Class in Advance
Before you even step into the studio, we recommend booking your class online. This ensures you have a reserved spot, and it speeds up your check-in process on the day of the class. Be sure to complete your profile with all the necessary information—it helps us get you settled quickly so you can focus on your ride!
2. Arrive AT LEAST 15 MINUTES EARLY for Setup
For your first indoor cycling class, plan to arrive about 15 minutes early. This gives you time to meet the instructor, ask any questions, and most importantly, get your bike set up correctly. Our team will guide you through adjusting the seat height, handlebars, and pedals to make sure you're comfortable throughout the ride. If you’ve never set up a bike before, no worries—we’ll walk you through it step by step.
NEVER ARRIVE LATE TO A CYCLE CLASS!
3. Wear the Right Gear
Wondering what to wear for your first cycling class? Stick to breathable, moisture-wicking clothing, and bring a water bottle and towel. You don’t want to overheat! Girls tend to wear leggings with a tank top or sports bra. Men tend to wear basketball-type shorts, with compression leggings underneath, if you have them, and a breathable T-shirt. Always wear comfortable and durable athletic socks. If you don’t have cycling shoes, no problem! You can wear regular athletic shoes, and we have pedals that work with both. Contact your specific studio for details on what shoes to bring.
4. TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY & HYDRATE
It’s important to fuel your body properly before your first ride. Don’t eat a large meal right before class, as it might leave you feeling sluggish or uncomfortable. But also, don’t come on an empty stomach either—try to have a light snack, like a banana or some yogurt, about 30–60 minutes before class to give you energy. It’s also mindful to drink water before you arrive, so you’re hydrated and ready to sweat.
5. Leave Expectations at the Door
When it comes to your first cycling class, it’s easy to feel like you need to keep up with everyone else. But the best tip for first-time riders? Leave all expectations at the door. This ride is about you getting comfortable, having fun, and learning the basics. Go at your own pace, and don’t be afraid to adjust the resistance to what feels right for your body. Everyone has to start somewhere!
6. Pace Yourself
One of the most common questions new riders ask is, "How hard should I push during my first class?" The answer is simple—listen to your body. Your instructor will guide you through various resistance and speed options, but you’re in control of your ride. The goal for your first few classes is to get comfortable with the bike, the rhythm, and the class structure. As you get stronger, you’ll naturally start to push harder. There’s no need to torture yourself. It’s a workout, just have fun.
7. Enjoy the Music and JUST Have Fun
There’s really no judgment—everyone is focused on their own ride, and your journey is just as important as anyone else’s. Whether you’re going at your own pace or trying to push harder, the key is to just have a good time. Let the music carry you through the ride; it’s there to keep you motivated and energized. So, dance a little, get lost in the beat, and remember—just showing up is half the battle, and instructors are there to support you every step of the way.
8. Post-Ride Tips
After your first cycling class, take a moment to stretch and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Your body will thank you! You might feel a little sore, but that’s a good sign and totally normal—it means your muscles are getting stronger. Don’t forget to pat yourself on the back for trying something new! The more consistent you are, the easier and more rewarding the rides will become.
9. Stay Consistent and Keep Riding
The best tip for anyone new to cycling is to stay consistent. The more often you ride, the more comfortable and confident you’ll become. Each class will help you build strength, endurance, and confidence. So don’t stop after your first ride—keep showing up.
Trying something new can feel a little intimidating, but now that you know what to expect, you’re ready to dive in. Remember, don’t take it too seriously.
